Take a course to get your M2 -- my $350 Gearing Up course made it easy to pass the M2 (you do it there, not on the roads) *and* pays for itself in one or two years of insurance. You can find a course near you here. A 250 Ninja would make a great first bike for insurance and shiny-side-up reasons, and beginner bikes tend to be in high enough demand that you'll be able to sell it for what you paid for it a year from now. Quite a bit zippier than this 250, too :-)
